故事 The Story
Cheap Matinees
The cinemas in Teluk Intan offerred something interesting and cheap during daytime of the weekends. The cinemas screened what was then known as "Cheap Matinees" in the mornings, usually at 11.00 am. (The word 日场 / 午后场 "matinee" is derived from "matin" which means morning. It is also used to mean afternoon performances.)
Cinema halls at that time were 2 storied. The upper level had seats which were in front of the projector room. They were known as Reserved Seats and, for normal screening times, cost more. However, the seats only cost 65 sen (about 1 yuan) each during the Cheap Matinee of re-runs. With such pricing, 杨杰吉 Yang Jieji could afford a separate seat for 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan.
杨杰吉 Yang Jieji was a fan of the bald actor Yul Brynner. From the western movie titled "Adiós, Sabata", 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan learnt the Spanish word for "good-bye" - Adiós. "Adiós" literally means "to God" (from the phrase "a Dios") and "good-bye" came from "God be with you".
(See below for 再见 for See you again and 告别 for Farewell.)
Ramming the Ground
The family had shifted from the government quarters in Jalan Jawa to a housing estate known as Antek Avenue. The residential area had just been newly developed. Before they moved into the house, his father had often brought him to the site which was under construction. He had to help his father pound the ground, as it was believed that the ramming process would level and toughen the tile flooring.
