This year 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan was given a bicycle. They had shifted from the government quarters in Jalan Jawa to a housing estate known as Antek Avenue. The residential area had just been newly developed.
Before they moved into the house, his father had often brought him to the site which was under construction. He had to help his father pound the ground, as it was believed that process would level and toughen the tile flooring.
Falling off the Bicycle
His father fixed small balancing wheels to the back wheel to start him off. Soon, 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan was confident to remove the balancing wheels and was whizzing along the road in front of the house. Over-confidence soon got over him. One evening, he fell and wounded his chin and elbow. The cut on his chin was so bad it would have required stitching. However, the family decided not go to the hospital. His parents bandaged him up. Fortunately, he recovered without a scar.

The Chinese Character 汉子
The character 根 gēn means roots. Just like the character 杨 Yáng, 根 gēn also has the 木 mù tree radical. The other component 艮 gěn means stubborn but plays the phonetic part of the character.
