One day 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan dropped by his neighbour's house and was invited to lunch. He went home excited by what was served to him. A bowl of rice served with cut chillies and dried prawns in a bowl.
Toward the end of this year, Yang J J, 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan's father was transferred from Teluk Intan to the capital of Malaysia, 吉隆坡 Kuala Lumpur.
The Student from the Small Town
杨丕源 Yang Piyuan was enrolled in a school named Pasar Road School II. The Standard 4 teacher of the school was not eager to put him in the first class of the tier, even though he proved his academic abilities with his report card from the St. Anthony school of Teluk Intan. The teacher was of the opinion that the results from a small town school was not at par with the results of that of a school in the capital city. It was Yang JJ's insistence that got 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan registered in the first class of that level. A week after getting into the new school, 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan had to sit for a class test. He obtained the class position of 43rd, beating a couple of students in the total marks. His teacher reprimanded the two students who performed more poorly than him. She shamed them for losing out to a student from a small town.
At the end of that year, there was a term test. By then, 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan had then improved to the 13th position in the class.
However, he did not continue his studies in the Pasar Road School II the following year. His mother could not bear to live in Cheras where his father had rented a house. She pressured her husband to shift away from Kuala Lumpur. As a compromise, Yang JJ worked out a solution in which the family would live with the KSH's first sister - known to them as Tua Yee.
Live and Let Die
It was more expensive to watch a movie in the capital. One Sunday, 杨杰吉 Yang Jieji took his son to the cinema. He saved by purchasing only one ticket as he could bring his small-sized son in for free. Before the start of the movie, there was no one seated next to him. But justy as the movie started, the seat was filled.
杨丕源 Yang Piyuan then wandered around the cinema hall looking for an empty seat but failed to find one. He then returned to his father's seat. 杨杰吉 Yang Jieji was a little annoyed that his son could not find a seat and had to let him sit on his lap for the entire running of the movie.
Don't Ask Me
This was the year that the British television science series, "Don't Ask Me" started airing. For the next couple of years 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan was a fan of the show. The series was partly instrumental in kindling his interest for knowledge.
His father fixed small balancing wheels to the back wheel to start him off. Soon, 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan was confident to remove the balancing wheels and was whizzing along the road in front of the house. Over-confidence soon got over him. One evening, he fell and wounded his chin and elbow. The cut on his chin was so bad it would have required stitching. However, the family decided not go to the hospital. His parents bandaged him up. Fortunately, he recovered without a scar.

The Chinese Character 汉子
The character 根 gēn means roots. Just like the character 杨 Yáng, 根 gēn also has the 木 mù tree radical. The other component 艮 gěn means stubborn but plays the phonetic part of the character.
