杨丕源 Yang Piyuan enrolled in the St Anthony School. He was in Primary One. Uncle Meganathan still ferried him to school - together with his son Frank Meganathan. 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan and Frank would spend evenings playing marbles and picking mangosteens that have dropped from the trees in front of their houses.
One evening, Uncle Meganathan took 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan for a drive to town with Aunty and Frank Meganathan. In town, Uncle Meganathan decided to stop by a Nyonya cake stall to buy some treats. Coincidentally, Grandma 王秀珍 Wang Xiuzhen was buying food near that stall. She was surprised to see her grandson with a family of Indian Malaysians. She reported the incident to 纪细汗 Ji Xihan the next day when they met.

His class teacher was a bachelor with behaviour that would be unacceptable in the 21st century. He would pinch the thighs of students who did not get the right answers to the questions he asked and also those who talked while he was teaching in class. One day, the he drew many stars on the blackboard. He told the students that he would reward the with 5 sen if they could count the number of stars on the board correctly. 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan got the answer of 46 right. Teacher Tan picked him from his seat, held him, kissed him on his cheek and gave him the 5 sen.

The Chinese Character 汉子
The character 根 gēn means roots. Just like the character 杨 Yáng, 根 gēn also has the 木 mù tree radical. The other component 艮 gěn means stubborn but plays the phonetic part of the character.
