故事 The Story
The first trip out of the country this year was to Thailand. The destination, 普吉 Phuket, is a haven for a variety of Chinese food / Thai-Chinese food to savour in Phuket. In addition, there was also Western food. The Burnt Butter Toast (with Honeycomb Toffee Vanilla Ice-cream) was something that tourists and locals alike had to queue up for. Mhee Som Chit (Hokkien Noodle Soup) was a dish that evolved from the food that originated in the Fujian Province.
The second trip was to 台湾 Taiwan. He landed in 高雄市 Gāoxióng shì / Kaohsiung before heading to 阿里山 Alishan.
On the 阿里山 mountain he rode on the Alishan Forest Railway. That infrastructure was built using Chinese labour during the Japanese occupation of the island of Taiwan. The beautiful forests of Alishan were raped to provide logs to fulfill the expansion goals of Japan. Sitting on a coach as the train snaked its way up the mountain he imagined himself a woodcutter forced by the Japanese invaders to fell the majestic trees.
The island of Taiwan was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1895 CE.
He spent a day trekking in the forests. There were magnificent trees and beautiful flowering plants. Alishan has transformed from a site that had been exploited to one that attracts tourists.
The next two trips to China was to the province South of the Clouds, 云南 Yunnan.
The first of the two saw 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan landing in 昆明 Kunming. This was his third time visiting the capital of 云南 Yunnan. This visit would take north of the province - 丽江 Lijiang, 虎跳峡 Hutiaoxia / Tiger Leaping Gorge and 大理 Dali.,
In 昆明 Kunming, he met with his online friend, an Editor of a news site and publisher. He also paid a visit to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (vaccine shot).
From the capital, he then travelled by High Speed Rail to 丽江 Lijiang.
Here 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan marvelled at the maze of cobbled streets. Finding the hotel he would stay in the ancient town was itself a game (not unlike an activity carried out by participants in The Amazing Race).
From 丽江 Lijiang, he went to 虎跳峡 Hutiaoxia where he hiked the beautiful gorge of 云南 Yunnan.
He then returned to his country of birth and residence from 昆明 Kunming. While awaiting for his flight, he chanced upon a discounted flight fare from 南宁 Nanning to Kuala Lumpur. He bought the ticket and began planning for the next trip which he would explore the south of 云南 Yunnan - the province south of the clouds.
The next visit to 云南 Yunnan was an entry by the China-Laos Railway from Vang Vieng, Laos. 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan took the China-Laos Railway to Boten also known as 磨丁 Moding. In Vang Vieng, he visited his friends at the school he volunteered in the year before. He drove a buggy from the hotel to the school in the interior.
Crossing the border (from 磨丁 Moding), he immediately passed 磨憨镇 Mohan, the town that lies on the boundary of the two countries. 磨憨镇 Mohan is located in the county of 勐腊县 Mengla of Yunnan. 勐腊 Mengla lies in the 西双版纳傣族自治州 Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna/Sipsongpanna. Xishuangbanna was part of Yongchang Prefecture during the Three Kingdoms and Jin Dynasties, and the territories of ancient southern states such as Nanzhao and Dali were formed after the eighth century. During this period.
He then arrived at the city of 西双版纳 Xishuangbanna.
In 西双版纳 Xishuangbanna, he bought a colourful book titled "辩色之花“ Flowers and Colours, first published in 2014 CE”.

From there, he continued on to 茶马古镇 Tea Horse Ancient Town in the 普洱 Pu'er prefecture-level city.
From Pu'er, he continued on to Ximeng.
His journey continued in 孟连 Menglian. Here, he tasted wonderful avocado coffee and ice-cream and learnt about the Tusi culture.
He then met his editor friend in 景迈山 Jingmai mountain.
From 景迈山 Jingmai, he headed off to Pu'er, stayed a night closed to the Pu'er railway station. The next day he took the train to 南宁 Nanning, the capital city of the neighbouring 广西 Guangxi Province.
Here, he went to the 德天布瀑 Detian Waterfalls which borders the country of Vietnam.
He flew to Malaysia from 南宁 Nanning.
His China travel for the year 2023 CE ended with the exploration of the province of 四川 Sichuan.
He landed in 成都天府国际机场 Chengdu Tianfu International Airport. He then stayed a night near the 成都东站 Chengdu East Railway Station and headed off to the 峨眉山 Emei Mountain the next day. The mountain is the tallest among the Four Sacred Mountains of China.
From Mount Emei, he would travel to the 乐山 Leshan Giant Buddha. Both the sites were inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list in 1996 CE.
He returned to 成都 Chengdu before proceeding north to 茂县 Maoxian (Mao county in the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Perfecture).
Before he returned to Malaysia, he visited the ancient ruins of 三星堆 Sanxingdui. Here is a place that is shrouded in both history and mystery.What is known so far is both complicated and compelling.
