故事 The Story
杨丕源 Yang Piyuan was 6 years old when riots happened between races in 马来西亚 Malaysia. He witnessed first hand what army personnel could do to civilians when an Emergency is declared.
Living the government quarters along Jalan Jawa in Teluk Intan, Yang Piyuan had Malaysians of Indian origin as neighbours on the opposite side of the road. Rani, a young teenage girl from the Indian family would pop over on nights when Mission:Impossible, the television series, was shown. One day during the period of Emergency, her brother came out from their house - when due to the curfew, they were all supposed to be indoors. When an army truck passed by, he hid. As soon as the vehicle was a distance away, he cheekily went onto the road and danced. It was just all for a matter of "adolescent fun". Moments later, the truck returned (his antics were sighted) and an army personnel jumped down and confronted him. Yang Piyuan could not hear what the conversation was, peering out from my window. A few seconds later, Yang Piyuan saw the soldier slap Rani's brother. It was a harsh but effective lesson to get civilians to stay indoors when the government declared an Emergency.
Before the riots began in the capital of Kuala Lumpur, there were already interesting "signs". In his case, 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan refused to go to school (kindergarten) that morning - something he was not known to do. However, his mother forced him onto the trishaw and off he went. Before school was over, Uncle Meganathan - his next-door neighbour - had driven to the kindergarten to fetch his son, Francis and 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan home.
Such uncanny feelings did not occur to him anymore until the year 2014 CE.
This was the year he first climbed the Kuala Lumpur Tower of 2048 steps. He was provided a sports vest which had the number of steps printed on the front. 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan took that to mean that 2048 CE would be his final year on Earth. That would mean he would be 93 years of age when he passed away.
He would go on to climb the tower in 2016 CE and 2019 CE.
It was not until the year 2007 CE when the book "MAY 13 Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969" by Kua Kia Soong was published and that 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan bought a copy and read it that he got more information about the incident.

In Malaysia, some attribute the racial riots to racial discrimination 种族歧视 ; others point their finger on political affairs 政治 - with some pointing to the communists in China. However, the book MAY 13 - Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969, published in the year 2007CE revealed that power struggle played a very major role.

歧 has two components: 止 which means stop and 支 which could mean a couple of things, including branch. When stop and branch are combined, one can extrapolate the meaning of 歧 as branching off at a fork or divergence. 视 has the meaning of to regard or to look upon. Putting the two characters 歧 and 视 together, 歧视 one can infer the meaning of regarding something with a divergent view; or the meaning of discrimination.
Among the kinds of discriminations that existed in 1969 include, but are not limited to,
种族歧视
racial discrimination
年龄歧视
age discrimination
性别歧视
gender or sex discrimination
宗教歧视
religion discrimination.
社会经济背景歧视
socio-economic background discrimination
外貌歧视
appearance discrimination
