故事 The Story
杨丕源 Yang Piyuan made his first trip to China (台湾 Taiwan) to carry out a Quality Control (QC) inspection for a disk drive company. He was surprised (if not, shocked) to discover that the Taiwanese company that supplied the winding coils was actually a "cottage industry" kind of enterprise. The enterprise was located on a unit of an apartment building. What was more eye-opening for him was that an old man who was puffing away his cigarette was carrying a plastic basket of coils from one assembly point to another. Back in the factory he was working, his QC inspectors were looking for contaminants on the coils under the microscope. Needless to say, the Quality Inspection report that 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan wrote and submitted to the United States headquarters was not pleasant.
杨丕源 Yang Piyuan's ability to write reports which clearly described what happened at the side of the suppliers gained him recognition in the Quality Engineering and Purchasing departments in the Headquarters. For this ability of his, he was requested to conduct inspection visits at the sites of the suppliers. This brought him to the countries of the United States, Singapore and Thailand, in addition to China Taipei.
In 台北 Taipei, the capital of 台湾 Taiwan, 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan visited the 中正纪念堂 Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. (See below for the description of the character 堂 of 纪念堂 (memorial hall). Here, he was impressed to see the bullet-proof sedan. However, he thought of the irony of what President 蒋介石 Chiang Kai-shek was reported to have said this when he took his first ride in his car.
"People in Taiwan are all my compatriots. I don't need any bulletproof protection."
The other thing that was memorable to 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan was that the meals he took were mainly dishes of melons and gourds. This was no longer the case when he revisited 台湾 Taiwan thirty years later, in 2023 CE.
