Time Period The Event & The Human Element
1469
(Ming Dynasty)
Fortified. The Hushan (Tiger Mountain) section of the Great Wall was constructed along the northern bank of the Yalu River, establishing what is today recognized as the eastern starting point of the Ming Great Wall — a stone sentinel watching over the border waters. Long before tourists came to take photographs, soldiers stood on these ramparts, their eyes fixed on the same emerald river that still flows below.
1909–1937
(Bridge-Building Era)
Bridged. Two international bridges were built across the Yalu — the first in 1911, and the second (now called the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge) in 1937. The quiet border river was suddenly threaded with steel, becoming a corridor of empire. The river, which had flowed in silence for millennia, now carried the rumble of trains and the weight of colonial ambition on its back.
1950–1953
(Korean War)
Tested. The Yalu became the frontline of a global conflict. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese People's Volunteers crossed the river under fire, while U.S. bombers reduced one of the bridges to the twisted ruin known today as the Broken Bridge. For three years, the river's reflection was shattered by explosions and lit by searchlights — a landscape transformed from pastoral beauty into a theater of war.
1988
(National Recognition)
Designated. The State Council officially designated the Yalu River as a National Key Scenic Area (国家重点风景名胜区), recognizing its unique blend of natural beauty, historical heritage, and border culture spanning 210 kilometers along the river. After centuries of being a boundary, a battlefield, and a bridge, the river was finally recognized for what it had always been: a landscape of profound beauty and memory.
2000s–2020s
(Tourism Development)
Developed. The scenic area was systematically developed with riverside walkways, boat tours that glide within meters of the North Korean shore, viewing platforms at the Broken Bridge, and restored sections of the Hushan Great Wall — integrating nature, history, and border observation into one experience. Where soldiers once crossed in darkness, tourists now board boats in daylight, peering across at a foreign land just an arm's length away — the river's story retold through curious eyes rather than fearful ones.
2026
(Present Day)
Thriving. Today, the Yalu River Scenic Area is one of Northeast China's most distinctive destinations — a place where visitors can walk the Ming Great Wall in the morning, tour the Broken Bridge at noon, and cruise the border river at sunset, all within a single day. One river, two nations, three bridges, six centuries of history — the scenic area is not just a place to see, but a place to feel the layered weight of time flowing downstream.
The Takeaway The Yalu River Scenic Area is a rare place where natural grandeur and human history are inseparable. Its emerald waters reflect both the ancient ramparts of the Great Wall and the twisted steel of a broken bridge — a landscape that has been a border, a battlefield, and now a sanctuary of memory and beauty.

(Jiāng shān rú huà)
"The river and mountains are like a painting." This chengyu captures the breathtaking beauty of the Yalu valley — but here, the "painting" is layered with history. Every brushstroke of the landscape carries the weight of empires, wars, and peace, making it a masterpiece not just of nature, but of time itself.
