Time Period The Event & The Human Element
1950–1953
(The War)
Fought. Nearly 3 million Chinese People's Volunteers crossed the Yalu River to fight in the Korean War. Over 197,000 gave their lives in some of the most brutal combat of the 20th century — from the frozen Chosin Reservoir to the bitter defense of Shangganling. They were farmers, students, and factory workers who traded their civilian clothes for cotton-padded uniforms, knowing that the winter ahead would be colder than any they had ever known.
October 1958
(Original Memorial)
Established. The Memorial Hall of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea was first opened on Jinshan (Gold Mountain) in Dandong — the very city from which the volunteers had departed just eight years earlier. It was China's first memorial dedicated to this war. The city that had watched its sons march off to war now built a home for their memory — a promise that their sacrifice would not dissolve into the mists of the Yalu.
1993
(Major Expansion)
Expanded. On the 40th anniversary of the armistice, the memorial underwent a major renovation and expansion. A towering memorial monument was erected, and new exhibition halls were added to house the growing collection of artifacts, documents, and personal testimonies. Forty years after the guns fell silent, the stories that had been whispered in family kitchens were finally given a public stage — each faded photograph a voice rescued from oblivion.
2014
(New Exhibition Hall)
Reopened. After a comprehensive three-year renovation, the memorial reopened with a state-of-the-art exhibition spanning 8,000 square meters. The new displays feature immersive dioramas, multimedia presentations, and over 20,000 artifacts — including personal belongings of Commander Peng Dehuai and weapons used on both sides. The museum no longer merely preserved objects; it reconstructed experiences. Visitors could now feel the biting cold of the Korean winter and hear the thunder of artillery through carefully crafted immersive scenes.
Present Day
(National AAAA Attraction)
Honored. Designated as a National Patriotic Education Base and a National AAAA Tourist Attraction, the memorial now welcomes over a million visitors annually. School groups, veterans' families, and international tourists walk its halls in quiet reverence. The memorial has become more than a monument to war — it is a classroom where each generation is invited to ask: what would I have carried across that river?
The Takeaway The Memorial Hall is not a celebration of war — it is a meditation on sacrifice. From the frozen fields of Korea to the quiet halls of Dandong, its purpose has remained constant: to ensure that the young men who crossed the Yalu River are remembered not as statistics, but as sons, brothers, and fathers who chose duty over comfort.

(Hào qì cháng cún)
"The noble spirit lives forever." This chengyu captures the memorial's deepest purpose: not to glorify conflict, but to honor the righteousness of those who faced impossible odds. Their bodies rest in foreign soil, but their spirit endures in these halls — a flame that time cannot extinguish.
