杨丕源 1982 CE

The movie The Secret of NIMH was released this year. 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan and 杨小伶 Yang Xiaoling missed the movie on the silver screen. Instead they rented a VHS video of the movie and watched it in her house one late morning.

NIMH stood for the National Institute of Mental Health. That title had a particular "connection" to 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan as his father worked as an Executive Officer in the Mental Hospital named Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan.

China had since become a republic a little over half a century ago. In other words, it had been 52 years since the last Emperor, Puyi 爱新觉罗·溥仪, abdicated his throne.

1963CE was the year that China had developed into a nation strong enough to contribute scientifically to Africa (非洲). It was then in the position to provide medical assistance to some countries in that continent.

The photo of the rabbits 兔 below was taken at the Centipede Hill 蜈蚣山 in Malaysia 马来西亚.

兔 is a 象形字 pictogram. There is a great similarity between the 甲骨文 oracle bone character and the character 兔.

It originated in the Shang 商 Dynasty during which a lot of oracle bones were used.The photo shows the oracle bones character 甲骨文 of the rabbit..

It is estimated that there are about 50,000 Chinese characters. However, some say the acquisition of about 1,000 characters should be enough for communication purposes. It is also estimated that only about 5% of chinese characters are pictograms. Most are 形声字 phonosemantic compounds where part of the character indicates meaning and another part suggests pronunciation.
