13 -13 - 50 Half a century
This year 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan celebrated half a century of life. Interestingly, reaching this milestone in the year 2013, he had visited 13 countries. By the end of this year, he would also have made 48 trips outside his country of birth.
Architecture that echoes the Past
On his 4th trip to China, he visited 澳 门 Macau. One of the attractions of 澳门 Macau was its 建筑 architecture. These photos interestingly show a contrast of buildings of new and past. Rising in the background is the Hotel Lisboa.
In 1557 CE, 澳 门 Macau was occupied by the Portuguese. In 1887 CE, the 清 Qing government and the Portuguese signed the Treaty of Peking, handing over 澳 门 Macao to the western country located about 10,000 km away from 北京 Beijing. In 1987 CE, Portugal and China signed agreement stipulating that 澳 门 Macau to be returned to China in 1999 CE.
He stayed at the Hotel Lisbao.
He was impressed by the grand chandelier at the lobby. The sight brought him back to 1999 CE. It was the year he visited Toronto, Canada. He had watched the chandelier fall in the Pantages Theatre during the musical The Phantom of the Opera. He was in Toronto for an e-learning project and was fortunate to catch the musical before it ended its run.
Besides the chandelier, 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan was also impressed by the decorations in gold that adorned the hotel.
He also visited the number of casinos that have been set up there.
The Grand Lisbao which was opened in 2007 CE.
Among the food he got to taste in Macau were
the well known 义顺牛奶 Yishun Milk Company 姜汁撞奶 steamed ginger milk pudding / curd and egg pudding

This was the year the paperback version of the book "The Story of Philosophy - A History of Western Thought" was published and 杨丕源 Yang Piyuan got hold of a copy of it. He appreciated the title of the book which specifically had the word Western in it. He was uncomfortable with so many writers, in particular, and people, in general, who think that the intellectual thoughts of the world solely originated from the "Western" part of it.
On page 9 of the book, it was stated that "Western philosophy started in a Greek city around two and a half thousand years ago".
