旅顺 Lushun, located at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula and administratively part of Dalian, is a compact historic port with outsized strategic importance. Known internationally as Port Arthur during the colonial era, it was a focal point of the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–95)—site of the 1894 Lushun Massacre—and the Russo-Japanese War (1904–05), where the grueling Siege of Port Arthur marked one of the first major uses of trench warfare and machine guns in modern combat. Controlled successively by Russia (1898–1905), Japan (1905–1945), and the Soviet Union (1945–1955), Lushun was only fully returned to China in 1955.
