大连 Dalian played a vital role as a key rear base during the
Korean War (1950–1953), serving as the nation's northeastern
maritime outpost and supporting Chinese forces across the 鸭绿江 Yalu
River. Dalian's citizens enthusiastically enlisted in the
military—over 60,000 volunteered—and contributed to the war effort
by donating funds for aircraft and artillery, participating in
增产节约 campaigns, and providing medical care for wounded soldiers
Notably, the Lüshun Aquatic Products Company dispatched 45 fishing
vessels and more than 330 crew members to directly participate in
the amphibious landing battles to liberate the Dahe and Xiaohe
Islands off Korea's west coast, sinking an enemy warship and
capturing over 200 prisoners. The city also established a war
hospital with 4,000 beds, treating and recovering over 22,000
injured Chinese soldiers.
Dalian's factories, such as the Dalian Railway Factory, repaired
over 360 steam locomotives and produced countless railcars to
build a "never-breaking" supply line to the front.
