Before Beijing’s Forbidden City was even finished, a different
Manchurian palace rose in Shenyang, blending Tibetan prayer
banners with dragon-throned halls. Its Octagonal Pavilion holds no
ordinary throne—it’s a tent made of stone, where
hunters-turned-emperors once planned the conquest of a billion
people. Hidden beneath an ordinary-looking kitchen, a secret
passage leads to a treasury that has never been fully inventoried.
This complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (listed in 2004 CE)
and one of only two surviving imperial palace compounds in all of
China.
