上海 Shanghai is one of China's four direct-controlled
municipalities and functions effectively as a city-state.
While compact in land area (approx. 6,340 km²), it commands a
strategic position at the mouth of the 长江 Yangtze River, with its
eastern coastline facing the 东海 East China Sea and its southern
shore bordering Hangzhou Bay.
Despite having only two provincial-level land neighbors, Shanghai
serves as the economic, financial, and transportation hub of the
entire Yangtze River Delta region.
